I-11: Dedifferentiation of Mouse Fibroblast Cells by Chemical Induction

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) generated by ectopic expression of four transcription factors have great promises for regenerative medicine in humans. Since the initial report of iPSCs by viral transfection, ample efforts have been made in the generation of iPSCs through nonviral approaches. Small molecules offer the advantages of low cost without genomic modification and have been used ...

Stage-specific embryonic antigen-3 (SSEA-3) and β3GalT5 are cancer specific and significant markers for breast cancer stem cells.

The discovery of cancer stem cells (CSCs), which are responsible for self-renewal and tumor growth in heterogeneous cancer tissues, has stimulated interests in developing new cancer therapies and early diagnosis. However, the markers currently used for isolation of CSCs are often not selective enough to enrich CSCs for the study of this special cell population. Here we show that the breast CSCs...

Glycolipid dynamics in generation and differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells

Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are glycoconjugates that function as mediators of cell adhesion and modulators of signal transduction. Some well-defined markers of undifferentiated human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are glycoconjugates, such as SSEA-3, SSEA-4, TRA-1-60 and TRA-1-81. However, Comprehensive GSL profiles of hiPSCs have not yet been eluci...

Combination of metformin and phenformin synergistically inhibits proliferation and hTERT expression in human breast cancer cells

Objective(s): Breast cancer remains a global challenge, and further chemopreventive therapies are still immediately required. Emerging evidence has revealed the potent anti-cancer effects of biguanides, Metformin (MET) and phenformin (PHE). Thus, to explore an efficient chemopreventive strategy for breast cancer, the antiproliferative effects of the combination of MET and PHE against breast can...
